PBS KIDS and Future Brain Media have just launched , a new videogame inspired by Aaron Augenblick’s hit series.The new game, developed by Curious Media, is now available on the PBS Kids Games app and website.
You can find it here.Aimed at kids ages 6-11, the game lets players explore the five iconic boroughs of City Island — City Center, Brickland, Homeville, Skytown, and Maker Hill — through 14 immersive mini-games.Players can tackle real-world challenges like painting a mural, planting a community garden, improving infrastructure, and spotting hidden messages in advertising.
According to the creators, “It’s fun with a purpose, introducing essential lessons in civics, community, and media literacy.” As part of their gameplay, kids can step into the shoes (or, rather, bulbs and kites) of fan-favorite characters Watt Light and Windy Kite, voiced by Kimia Behpoornia and Kimiko Glenn.Comedian James Adomian also returns, voicing a colorful cast of City Island citizens.Here’s a gameplay video: The gameplay aims to provide an engaging and immersive experience for players, allowing them to enter the uniquely anthropomorphic world, explore a vast metropolis, and interact with its diverse residents.
This ambitious project is the result of a collaboration between Curious, the game developers, and Future Brain, the writers and animators behind the series.By combining their expertise, the teams have crafted a game that showcases some of the most innovative animation and storytelling ever featured in PBS Kids games.“My dream was to give fans of the show a chance to step inside the world of City Island, and hang out with all the characters,” said Augenblick.
“It’s a blend of all my favorite things: cartoons, surrealism, city life, and comedy, all wrapped up in a video game.” Players will encounter a rich array of mini-games strategically hidden throughout the city, encouraging deeper exploration and interaction within City Island.Each gameplay element is tied to core concepts in civics, providing players with not only entertainment but also educational value.In addition to , fans can “unleash their creativity” with the , now available on the PBS Kids app and website.

The series is created by Aaron Augenblick, with animation directed by Katie Wendt, and style by art director Gemma Correll.Each episode features original music by Tunde Adebimpe of the influential indie-rock band “TV on the Radio.” The voice cast features Kimia Behpoornia, Kimiko Glenn, and James Adomian, in addition to special guest stars like Rachel Bloom, Julio Torres, Amy Schumer, and Rosie Perez.Since premiering in 2023, City Island has received over 140 million streams on PBS Kids and won a Webby Award for best kids and family viewing.
