Max Sets The Boy and the Heron Streaming Date

The Oscar-winning film’s debut is part of a multiyear deal extending U.S.streaming rights of award-winning Studio Ghibli’s catalog, including ‘Spirited Away,’ ‘Howl's Moving Castle,’ ‘The Wind Rises,’ ‘The Tale of The Princess Kaguya,’ and ‘When Marnie Was There.’
Hayao Miyazaki’s will make its U.S.streaming debut September 6 on Max.

The hand-drawn, original story is Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years that he both wrote and directed.joins the rest of the Studio Ghibli library on Max as part of an exclusive multiyear deal announced earlier this year.   Netflix will stream the Oscar-winning film in all countries outside the U.S.and Japan, along with 22 other Studio Ghibli films, including ,  and .

The titles will stream in Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America later this year.In the film, after losing his mother in a hospital fire, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside.There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron.

When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead.As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself.The film features the voice talents of Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh.

Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. Journalist, antique shop owner, aspiring gemologist—Laurén brings a diverse perspective to animation, where every frame reflects her varied passions.
